Dog Training SecretsDog Training, Dog Training Collars, Hunting Dog Training, Potty Training a Dog, and Dog Obedience Training in AustinWhat's the secret to keeping your dog on his or her best behavior? Is it just about reinforcing desired behavior and ignoring unwanted behavior? The good and the bad news about successful dog training is that dogs are not motivated only, or even mostly, by external reinforcement such as praise, scolding, or treats. Getting your dog to respect your desires and behave properly around people, or when left alone, requires that you be seen as the alpha dog. That in turn requires you to act in certain ways around your dog. Introducing Scott Marshall, Dog Trainer and his Search and Rescue partner, ShadowI got Shadow when she was a puppy in March 2001. People who meet Shadow are always amazed at her level of obedience.

The Dog Training Problem |
| |
|
|
In most cases, the dog is not the problem ... the owner is miscommunicating! Are YOU trainable? The Dog Training SolutionSolving dog behavior problems will require you to treat your dog differently, and with a great deal of consistency. This is especially true if you have had your dog for a while but you didn't know the principles that govern how dogs identify and respond to leaders -- whether human or canine. I have applied these principles for many years to help dog owners establish or change their dogs' behavior. Like humans, dogs develop habits. Changing those habits is possible but it does not happen overnight. However, just as with humans, once you understand what's really motivating a negative behavior, you can help the dog (or the person!) get the benefits that the behavior is designed to get, without the negative behavior itself.

Communicating Effectively with Your DogDogs aren't stupid, but in spite of their ability to respond to spoken commands, they really don't speak our language, and they never will. You have to learn the dog's language, which is of course nonverbal.

What's With the "SPCA" in the Domain Name?As an SPCA volunteer, I follow and advocate their position on proper treatment of all animals, even when they are "misbehaving" (not doing what we want).1
OK, let me recommend that you adopt a dog from the SPCA and train it Please. 1With some exceptions. Please ask me about those. |
